The importance of the climate change in Greenland lies
in the millions of cubic meters of fresh water it has. It represents the 10% of
the world’s total reserves of fresh water. Because of this, preserving
Greenland over the climate change is so important.
The main topic of discussion between the experts is whether the increasing temperatures are a natural phenomenon or it is caused by human action. Today more and more people are convinced that emissions of gasses produced by human action are the principal cause of the global warming. So far, more than 180 countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to reduce the industrial emissions of the principal greenhouse gasses (carbon dioxide, principally).

It is a fact that the ice of Greenland is thawing. The
sea ice is 1 meter thinner today than it was earlier. Furthermore, in certain
areas of the country glacier heads are pulling back year after year. One
example of this is the ice fjord near Illussat which has pulled back almost 10
km between 2001 and 2004.
The ice sheet is melting as a result of the increasing of temperature. If the process continues, the world’s oceans will rise 6-7 meters in few hundred years.
