Contrary to what people often think, Greenland has very green landscapes and vast tracts of fertile land.
During the Arctic summer, vast tracts of land are covered by colorful flowers, herbs, mosses and heather. In addition, there are five types of orchid flower in Greenland and some species of small trees that grow in the inner fjords in Southern Greenland.
The most common species of flowers of Greenland are the Niviarsaq which means ‘young woman’ and the flower known as broad-leaf fireweed are found all over the country. The last-mentioned flower is particularly common in stony soils and sandy riverbeds.
Another common flower found in Greenland are the Greenlandic bluebell that can be seen principally in North Greenland and on the east coast.
The bog blueberry has sweet blueberries, while the crowberry produces blackberries that are popular ingredient in many Greenlandic desserts.
